twd- the not-really coconut tart

And by not really, I mean there is not coconut in this tart.  I cannot follow a recipe to save my life.  Every time, no matter if the recipe is old or new, I have to modify things.

I think this week I modified into a completely different desert….

I guess I should have started out saying that I have made the coconut tart millions of times (okay, okay, I’ve made the pie at least five times.)  My family is a custard cream pie kind of family and Dorie’s cream pies are fantastic.  My father likes the chocolate, my mother loves the coconut, and Mike enjoys the banana.  That being said, I really didn’t want to make something this week that I knew I already loved, so I modified the recipe into….

Turtle cream cup-pies….

I have a love for food that I can pick up with my fingers, take two bites, and move on to something else.  So, I even put pies in finger food form.  This particular pie has the normal pie crust base (only with a little cocoa powder substitution,) the custard filling (with homemade caramel mixed in), and pecans tossed on top for good measure.

Okay, okay.. I may have gone a little crazy but sometimes a girl has got to do what a girl has got to do…. and right now, this girl had to at least try making a turtle cream pie!

Oh yeah, and by the way, these little cup-pies are delicious (well, as long as you like caramel…)

To see the actual coconut recipe check out check Beryl of cinemon girl and for the caramel recipe, I used this one.

Oh my gosh, please pass a turtle tart–I’d pick that over coconut any day!

Way to shake it up! I’m not a cream pie girl (at all) so if it weren’t for TWD I don’t think I’d ever make cream pies, or get to see really awesome takes on cream pies like your turtle cream pies (I’m pretty sure that’s an obnoxious run-on sentence, sorry). I love that your little turtle pies are almost bite sized. That’s always a plus in my book.
